The first passenger car made in modern China was a sedan named “Dengfeng”, manufactured by First Automobile Works in Changchun. Automobile technicians in Shanghai were delighted about the “Dengfeng”. Although there were no car manufacturers in Shanghai at that time, the people in car assembling companies bravely took up the job. In 1958, technicians spent 5 months manufacturing a sedan by hand, named “Fenghuang” – Chinese Phoenix. Though the sedan was produced, the newly formed Shanghai automobile company was not satisfied with its performance. In an urge to move on, they started to develop a new sedan based on Benz-220S. The Shanghai automobile company successfully manufactured the SH760 in 1964, later became the best well know sedan in Shanghai.
